The Des Moines Bicycle Collective recognizes, encourages, and facilitates the use of bicycles as a viable mode of transportation and recreation in the State of Iowa Our motto: changing Des Moines two wheels at a time.
- DMBC accepts donations of good-quality used bikes that will not require major repairs in order to get them back on the road
- DMBC sells good used bikes, used parts, and limited new parts (tires, tubes, incidentals)
- promotes cycling as viable, healthy transportation; increasing numbers of bicycle commuters and recreational riders
- advocates to make Des Moines and the metro area more pedestrian and bicycle friendly
- supports the City of Des Moines goal of reaching “Bronze” designation of “Bicycle-Friendly Communities” by 2010
- DM Bicycle Collective is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation.

Why Des Moines needs the Collective
- cycling activity is on the rise as Des Moines residents seek multi-modal transportation solutions
- as trails, parks, and other amenities are developed downtown, there is a need to encourage and support bicycle transportation in this zone
- as the price of motor fuels continues to increase, there is increasing interest in bicycle commuting and transportation
- good transportation alternative for many people who can’t afford or don’t want to keep a car
- multiple benefits to the economy (locally purchased goods), environment (greenhouse-neutral transportation), and society (social/cultural connections; improved health and wellness; lower medical costs; improved sense of community)
- supporting the City of Des Moines goal of reaching bronze designation for “Bicycle-Friendly Communities”
